Future Chefs Challenge, Whale Branch Elementary and Hilton Head Island Elementary

Thirty-five young cooks from elementary schools submitted salad recipes in this year’s Future Chefs Challenge, sponsored by Sodexo. Three recipes were selected as finalists, and the students prepared their salads for a panel of judges who awarded points based on the recipes’ originality, healthy attributes, plate presentation, ease of preparation and kid-friendliness. Bonus points were awarded for using specific ingredients that included ingredients such as black beans, strawberries, pineapple, mango, dried herbs or spices, chicken, ground beef, turkey, tortillas and roasted or sweet potatoes.

Fourth-grader Dairrion McDaniel from Whale Branch Elementary School was the overall winner for his Mango Berry Taco Tango Salad. Fourth-grader Anzlee Studenc from Hilton Head Island Elementary International Baccalaureate took first place for her Let-Tuce Eat Yummy Salad, and fifth-grader Tyler Kruse from Red Cedar Elementary took second with his Warm Southwestern Chicken Salad.
