Painting a bright future

Hilton Head Island High school students recently won 22 top “Gold Key” awards in the Southeast regional 2015 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.  But even more remarkable was that five of those 22 awards were earned by the same young artist, senior Dominique “Niki” Antunez.  Her five Gold Key-winning paintings give her five opportunities in the national-level competition later this spring.  More than 90,000 teens around the nation in grades 7 through 12 submitted more than 250,000 works of art and writing in 28 categories.  Winning students earn opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships.  Antunez is currently scouting out possibilities for college, where she plans to study architecture.
