Keeping it in the family

Hilton Head Island High grad Anamarie Gonzalez (Class of 2007) is driving something a bit bigger than a car these days.  When on duty as conning officer of the USS Spruance, Gonzales is charged with piloting the 510-foot, 9,200-ton Burke-class guided missile destroyer at speeds of up to 35 mph.  The ship has a crew of 260.  Senior Chief Reulito Gonzalez, a proud father and retired Navy veteran who directs the Navy ROTC program at Hilton Head Island High, passed along the photo of his daughter aboard the Spruance in Manila harbor.  Senior Chief Gonzales was born in the Phillipines, and over the Christmas holidays daughter Anamarie was able to visit with family in the Manila area.  Anamarie also was the conning officer who piloted the ship when it docked in Manila.  Below is a photo of the Spruance at sea.
