Bull market at Port Royal

A team of five Port Royal Elementary School fifth-graders won the elementary division state championship in the 2012-13 Stock Market Game.  More than 1,850 students participated in the competition, which is sponsored by the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina.  In the elementary division, each of the 99 competing school teams was given $100,000 of hypothetical money to invest in any publicly traded company on the three U.S. stock exchanges. Teams researched companies and made stock trades on line.  The winning Port Royal team earned more than $8,000 in profits during the game’s 10 weeks of competition.  From left, pictured team members are Samuel Horton, Ashley Gavigan, Remy Poulin (also the Stock Market Game Essay Contest State Winner out of 1,800 entries), Jackson McCaskey and Heather Butler.  The team’s coach is teacher John O’Connell, whose other Port Royal Elementary team placed 13th out of 99 participating teams statewide in the elementary division.
