Animal lover at heart

“One dog, two cats, one hamster, two guinea pigs and several fish.”  That was Kourtney Matt’s response when asked if she had any pets at home.  The Whale Branch Early College High School 11th-grader is an animal lover who wanted to do something special for some of the animals in our area who don’t have homes. So last school year she donated a box of towels, blankets and toys, and also raised more than $200 for the Beaufort County Animal Shelter & Control.  Kourtney had volunteered at the shelter since she was in seventh grade.  This year she wanted to get her classmates involved, so she approached her GEAR UP Graduation Coach, Emmanuel Wheeler, who took the idea to administration.  The school offered a “dress-down day” that allowed students a day of no uniforms in turn for making donations to the animal shelter.  The result was some happy animals.
