Behavior Management

Beaufort County School District Behavior Management Specialist program is designed to assist students in making positive decisions about their behavior and actions. The Behavior Management Specialist partners with teachers and other support staff to establish a school environment that is conducive to learning. Our goal is to promote a safe and positive school environment based on best practices in behavior management. The Behavior Management program primarily provides services to students with the most severe behavior issues. The majority of these students have an extensive history of behavior problems that have resulted in numerous suspensions in and out of school.

Effective behavior management is rooted in good program organization and strong leadership. Well prepared, relevant, and exciting programs will capture the imaginations and energy of the participants and will deter disruptive and negative behavior patterns.

The behavior management specialist program is designed to:
  • Assist schools in the areas of special and general education.
  • Offer teacher support to maximize instructional time for academic learning by minimizing behavior disruptions.

Positive Behavior Supports

Positive Behavior Supports is a collaborative, assessment-based process to developing effective interventions for problem behavior. PBIS emphasizes the use of proactive, educative, and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve meaningful and durable behavior and lifestyle outcomes. This system of positive behavior support aims to build functional, effective environments in which appropriate behavior is more effective than problem behavior.

What will PBIS look like in our school?

  • DATA is used to help track progress and indentify areas to target for intervention
  • Discipline referral PROCESS & PROCEDURES are CONSISTENT throughout the school
  • Uses school-wide EXPECTATIONS & RULES in specific settings to TEACH students appropriate behavior
  • REWARD SYSTEM to encourage and model appropriate behavior and EFFECTIVE CONSEQUENCES to discourage inappropriate behavior.

"If a child doesn't know how to read, we teach. If a child doesn't know how to multiply, we teach. If a child doesn't know how to drive, we teach. If a child doesn't know how to behave, we...? Why can't we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?"
Tom Herner, NASDE President, Counterpoint 1998, (p.2)
